We give children a voice on World Day of the Hospitalized Child
SJD San Boi Hospital commemorates World Day of the Hospitalized Child with the first-person experience of Àritz, Lara and Izan
With this initiative, the Hospital claims the rights of admitted children and recalls the need to make healthcare centers a friendly environment.
Aritz, Lara and Izan have been admitted to theSJD Sant Boi Hospital. For a few days the Hospital will be their home and the healthcare team will focus on making them feel at home, while informing them of each of the steps they take. His words provide a sincere and spontaneous look that helps us to better understand What does it mean to be a hospitalized child?, and are useful for all those children who will soon be admitted.
On the occasion of World Day of the Hospitalized Child, which is celebrated every year on May 13, the professionals in the maternal and child area of the SJD Sant Boi Hospital have wanted to give prominence to children who experience hospitalization firsthand. The action has materialized through a testimonial video in which three children explain, in their own voices, what it's like to live in the hospital. "The nurse seemed very nice to me, she explained very well everything they were going to do to me," explains Izan who, accompanied by his family, is admitted to the sixth floor of the Hospital.
In the interviews, the three participants share their experiences, detail the procedures they have applied and send a positive message to children who need to be operated on or hospitalized. "I would tell them not to be afraid, that they won't hurt him and that nothing will happen to them," they explain.
Comprehensive and humanized care to guarantee the rights of hospitalized children
Their experiences are a reflection of the fulfillment of the main children's rights, collected in the European Charter of the Rights of the Hospitalized Child. This letter establishes that since the hospitalization of children has different characteristics from those of adults, the necessary strategies must be used to make the experience of the illness or intervention as positive as possible.
In this sense, the SJD Sant Boi Hospital wants to highlight the importance of guaranteeing acomprehensive and humanized care, which takes into account not only the medical aspects, but also the emotional and social well-being of children. In addition, it encourages the creation ofwelcoming environments, adapted to the needs of children, and promotes play areas, education and emotional support.
The World Day of the Hospitalized Child aims to raise awareness in society and claim the rights of hospitalized children, recalling the need to make the hospital experience as friendly as possible. The proposal was born from the Spanish Federation of Parents of Children with Cancer and has ended up spreading throughout the territory. The chosen date coincides with the day on which the European Parliament issued the resolution of the European Charter of the Rights of the Hospitalized Child.
