It has been awarded the PRAN 2026 Awards as the best initiative in surveillance and control of antibiotic consumption, one of the main state recognitions in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
The tool supports healthcare professionals in prescribing antibiotics in a precise and personalized way
The AppATB project, led by Dr. Vicens Diaz de Brito, head of Infectious Diseases at the SJD Sant Boi Hospital, has been recognized at the PRAN Awards with the award to the 'Best initiative in surveillance and control of antibiotic consumption and their resistances in the field of human health'. This award, awarded by theSpanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) and the National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance (PRAN), is one of the main state recognitions in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Previously, the project had been recognized in the Knowledge Industry 2024 call.
The AppATB provides detailed and personalized clinical and microbiological information, adapted to certain antibiotics depending on the local context and shows in real time the resistance and sensitivities to antibiotics by the population. With this tool, healthcare providers can prescribe antibiotics accurately, adapting to the bacterial resistance patterns of each center and region.
Currently, the tool already is being used in four Catalan hospitals (Sant Joan de Déu Sant Boi Hospital, Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital, Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital in Lleida and Sant Joan University Hospital in Reus). Its implementation has allowed antibiotics to be prescribed in a more appropriate way, aligning with the directives of theWorld Health Organization and of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
The award will be presented during the European Day for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics, next November 18.
