Hospitals to prescribe more precise antibiotics with the AppATB
- On European Antibiotic Awareness Day, health authorities urge people not to self-medicate or discontinue treatment halfway through
- The AppATB project led by Parc Sanitari SJD allows treatments to be personalised and helps professionals choose the most appropriate antibiotic
- Dr Vicens Díaz de Brito and his team are ready to market this project, which they have undertaken in partnership with the Polytechnic University of Madrid
The AppATB provides detailed, personalised clinical and microbiological information tailored to specific antibiotics based on the local context and shows real-time antibiotic resistance and sensitivity among the population. This tool enables doctors to prescribe antibiotics precisely, matching the bacterial resistance patterns of each centre and region.
The tool is ready for use in health centres and hospitals across the region. Currently, Catalan hospitals have already begun to roll it out and preliminary data are being analysed to assess its impact.
After it was one of the winning projects in the Knowledge Industry 2024 competition in the innovative project category, the best strategy for marketing AppATB is now being drawn up.
Implementing this tool will enable antibiotics to be prescribed more appropriately, in line with the guidelines of the World Health Organisation and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
18 November: European Antibiotic Awareness Day
The Quality and Patient Safety Unit and the Infectious Diseases Department at Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu endorse the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control's alert to raise awareness about the threat that antibiotic resistance poses to public health and promote rational use of these medicines.
More and more bacteria are developing the ability to combat the effects of antibiotics. Rising antimicrobial resistance reduces the effectiveness of these drugs and makes infections more severe and transmissible to others.
Health authorities thus recommend:
1. Only take antibiotics with a prescription. Do not self-medicate.
2. It is essential to complete the treatment, even if you feel better.
3. Do not keep antibiotics at home or share them with anyone.
