A pioneering study is underway to improve the lives of people with HIV and severe mental disorders
The project, awarded the Gilead PRISMA 2025 grant, promotes a pioneering, multicenter, and multidisciplinary study with the aim of having reliable and personalized tools that allow improving the comprehensive care of people with HIV and severe mental disorders
It involves SJD Sant Boi Hospital, the MERITT mental health research group from Parc Sanitari SJD, the NGO Sant Boi en Positiu TransVIH, the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and a care team made up of professionals from four Catalan hospitals.
The principal investigator will be Dr. Vicens Díaz de Brito, head of the Infectious Diseases Service at SJD Sant Boi Hospital.
Parc Sanitari SJD collected a Gilead PRISMA 2025 grant yesterday in Madrid, which provides the institution with €30,000 in funding for HIV research. The project, one of the six winners of this edition, promotes a pioneering pilot study that seeks to improve the quality of life of people with HIV and severe mental disorders through digital solutions. The main objective of the study Adaptation and validation of quality of life and satisfaction questionnaires with antiretroviral treatment in PLHIV and severe mental disorders using ePROMs and ePREMs (HIV-PROPSIQ) is to have reliable and personalized tools that allow measuring the quality of life of people with HIV and severe mental disorders, in order to promote comprehensive patient care.
The chronicity of HIV has brought new challenges, and achieving optimal quality of life has become an essential indicator for improving care for people living with HIV (PLHIV). The prevalence of severe mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, or recurrent major depression, is higher among PLHIV compared to the general population. These disorders worsen the prognosis and make clinical follow-up more difficult, while also increasing the double stigma associated with both conditions. Despite their relevance, current tools for assessing quality of life and satisfaction with treatment are not adapted to this group.
Pioneering, multicenter, and multidisciplinary study.
The study involves participation from SJD Sant Boi Hospital, with Dr. Vicens Díaz de Brito as the principal investigator (PI) of the project. the MERITT research group from the Research and Development Unit of Parc Sanitari SJD, led by Dr. Susana Ochoa. The NGO Sant Boi en Positiu TransVIH, the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and the HIV Units team, made up of care professionals specialized in the follow-up of people living with HIV infection.
The 1st call for the Gilead PRISMA 2025 grant was aimed at projects that promote healthcare, scientific, and technological research in HIV, with the goal of improving linkage to the healthcare system for vulnerable groups. The six award-winning initiatives were announced yesterday at an event held in Madrid.
