  • The two institutions are taking advantage of the centenary of the death of the modernist architect to strengthen ties with the territory and promote local heritage.

  • The program includes routes, workshops, exhibitions, educational and family proposals, and participatory actions designed to involve the community.

Coinciding with the commemoration of the centenary of the death of Antoni Gaudí, the Sant Boi Town Council and Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu are promoting a joint program of cultural, educational and outreach activities to highlight the footprint of modernism and Gaudí’s relationship with the city.

This shared initiative is aligned with the municipal and Parc Sanitari objectives of strengthening ties with the territory, promoting local heritage and encouraging community participation. It is precisely from these objectives that this program is born, which begins this week and will extend until the end of the year.

A year to rediscover Gaudí

With a wide-ranging program of routes, workshops, exhibitions, school activities, family proposals and participatory actions, Sant Boi becomes a Gaudí city this year. The created program will serve to disseminate the figure of the architect from a contemporary perspective and to recover unique spaces in the municipality linked to modernism.

Among the central elements of the celebration is the Invisible Garden, a modernist architectural ensemble located within the grounds of Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu. The latest research, endorsed by the doctoral thesis of architect David Agulló, suggests that this space could have been a creative laboratory of Gaudí between 1903 and 1912. But, in addition, the program includes routes and visits to different modernist corners of the city built in parallel with this space.

It will also be a year to claim the modernism that took root in Sant Boi at the beginning of the 20th century in places such as Parc de Marianao and the Torre de la Miranda (works by Ramon Fontseré, a disciple of Gaudí), the expressions of summer modernism and that of factories such as Can Massallera.

Highlighted activities

Throughout the year, citizens will be able to enjoy various proposals that connect art, health, history and community. Among the jointly promoted activities, the following stand out:

  • Garden of Light at the Invisible Garden. Lighting installation inspired by Gaudí’s gaze towards nature. The Gotes (Drops) show reimagines, through light and sound, the old lake of the Garden and symbolically recovers its life with a three-dimensional choreography of luminous drops.
  • Guided visits to the Invisible Garden. Tour of this unique space, with historical and architectural interpretation that allows rediscovering forms, textures and elements common to other works that the modernist architect designed in Barcelona or other places in Catalonia.
  • Dialogue "Gaudí: space and people". A reinterpretation center that will explore the connections between Gaudí’s work and the social context of his time, with special emphasis on the link between art and health.
  • Photographic workshop "Analogies". An artistic participatory proposal that invites identifying recurring motifs in different works by Gaudí and capturing them in unique spaces in Sant Boi.
  • Modernist itineraries in the municipality. Summer modernism, Parc de Marianao and the Torre de la Miranda, modernism linked to industrial development and a route that will connect the sculpture homage to Gaudí –located in Ciutat Cooperativa– with the Invisible Garden.
  • Conference cycle. “Visible and Invisible Architectures. Landscape, power and legacy of Gaudí”, in collaboration with UNED Sant Boi, which offers a cross-cutting perspective on architecture, landscape and symbolic imagery, from the Palau de Marianao to the contemporary re-reading of trencadís.
  • Family activities and for all audiences. Throughout the year, workshops and creative proposals aimed at families are included so that children and adults can share experiences that connect Gaudí’s thinking with imagination and artistic creation.

Strengthening the cultural and social identity of Sant Boi

This joint program is the result of coordinated work between Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu and the Sant Boi Town Council, reaffirming the commitment to promote cultural heritage and foster activities that enhance community well-being. In this regard, as the mayor of Sant Boi, Lluïsa Moret, explains, with the Gaudí Year, we have a unique opportunity to make the city come alive by discovering the links with the figure of the brilliant architect and to highlight the unique elements of the local modernist heritage through a series of activities that will involve local artists, schools, young people, seniors and the entire citizenry”.

“The commemoration of the Gaudí Year is a unique opportunity to connect heritage, health and community. This project allows us to bring the Invisible Garden and modernism closer to all citizens from an inclusive, educational and participatory perspective,” assures José Luis Argudo, director of Solidarity at Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu.
