Nurse-led research provides solutions to improve the efficiency of the 125 patient care tasks nurses perform, on average, per hour

Data supports the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu’s commitment to research, which continues to grow with the "Nursing Research Challenge" project

These are some conclusions from the 1st Nursing Research Day, co-organized with Campus Docente SJD and Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona

On Thursday, 3 April, the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu hosted the 1st SJD Nursing Research Day. The various presentations highlighted that nurse-led research has moved beyond tradition-based practice to promote evidence-based practice.

Research provides solutions for some of the 125 care tasks professionals perform on average per hour, as explained in the keynote address by Dr. Mónica Vázquez Calatayud, corporate director of the Professional Development and Nursing Research Area at the University of Navarra Clinic.

Growth of nursing research

At the Parc Sanitari SJC, the commitment to nursing research is backed by data: In just two years, the number of female doctors has grown from one to five and the number of female doctoral candidates from two to ten in the "Nursing Research Challenge" programme. Nursing is undergoing a transformation: from a historically care-focused profession to one driven by research and innovation. However, there is still a long way to go to reach the level of countries like England or Finland, where 2% of nurses hold doctorates.

The experience of the Parc Sanitari SJD, Campus Docente SJD, and Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona shows that nursing-driven research seeks not only excellence but is also multidisciplinary. This approach ensures more successful knowledge transfer to daily practice. The goal is to improve the quality of care, optimize health outcomes, and establish nursing as a leading scientific discipline.

Three centres, one shared commitment: strengthening the research dimension

The event was organized into three thematic blocks, where professionals from the three organizing centres presented active research projects and nurse-led communications, showcasing the different research organization models implemented in each centre. Additionally, in the "Impact of Research in Five Minutes" session, attendees selected three out of six projects through direct voting, which were awarded 50 hours for research.

"We must continue to believe in and invest in nursing research," concluded Eva M. Melendo.
