Hospital SJD Sant Boi expands its surgical activity with a new state-of-the-art operating theatre
A state-of-the-art control panel that integrates the anaesthesia computer, along with an adjustable lighting system, are some of the standout features of the new operating theatre
The centre thus strengthens its role as a leading referral hospital in the region, with a clear commitment to technology, clinical safety, and the continuous improvement of the experience of the people receiving care
Hospital SJD Sant Boi has put its seventh operating theatre into service, a high-tech surgical space. This new facility, which was adapted without interrupting activity in the remaining surgical areas, strengthens the centre’s care capacity with the aim of reducing waiting lists, improving the patient experience, and continuing to advance toward an innovative, safe, and patient-centred healthcare model.
A qualitative leap forward in technology, safety, and efficiency
This new operating theatre incorporates a fully integrated and digitised system, representing a significant advance over previous equipment. State-of-the-art control panel: Monitors the operating theatre’s status in real time, including cleaning processes, technical alarms, and any electrical incidents. Unlike the old system, which only provided generic warnings, the new one precisely identifies the source of any fault.
The anesthesia team’s computer, previously on a separate trolley, is now fully integrated into the unit, along with a dedicated screen that serves as a line isolation monitor for the operating theatre. The space also has a fully integrated screen that functions as a computer, allowing diagnostic tests and other necessary materials to be displayed during the procedure.
Lighting adapted to complex surgeries
One of the most innovative elements is the new adjustable LED lighting system. It includes a perimeter LED strip that is especially useful in laparoscopic surgery. These procedures require surgeons to work practically in the dark, while nursing staff need light to carry out their tasks. For example, blue light provides contrast with the red of blood, making it easier for the nursing team to work without interfering with the surgeons’ vision. The lighting can be adapted to complex surgeries and configured in different colours depending on clinical needs.
The operating theatre incorporates a fourth articulated arm: Equipped with an additional monitor, highly beneficial for laparoscopic surgery, along with a new surgical light that improves visibility and precision during procedures. Enhanced communications: Integrated speakers that can connect to a mobile phone, plus a built-in telephone in the control panel for internal and external communications.
Infrastructure renewed and designed for the future
Regarding infrastructure, the electrical panel has been completely renewed with clearly labelled circuits, new lighting points, and a greater number of outlets, allowing more equipment to be connected in the future. The operating theatre’s climate control is maintained within regulatory parameters to ensure bacteriological safety and prevent any risk of contamination.
Thinking about the safety and comfort of the patient, the new space includes a surgical bed specially designed to accommodate bariatric patients or those with higher body weight, improving accessibility and adapting to all care needs.
A step forward for healthcare in the region
With this new facility now operational, Hospital SJD Sant Boi has seven active operating theatres. This reinforces its role as a leading referral hospital in the region, with a clear commitment to technology, clinical safety, and the continuous improvement of the patient experience, delivering quality, innovative, and compassionate care.
