Second dialogue between medicines: the therapeutic use of psilocybin from an intercultural perspective
Registration is open for the event on Friday 14 March, at the auditorium of the main headquarters of Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu, in Sant Boi de Llobregat, in both in-person and online formats
The meeting will address two realities: contemporary clinical research on psilocybin and the use of sacred mushrooms in traditional Mazatec medicine
On Friday 14 March, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the second dialogue between medicines will take place, titled "The therapeutic use of psilocybin from an intercultural perspective: contemporary clinical research and traditional Mazatec medicine, at the Parc Sanitari SJD Auditorium, in Sant Boi de Llobregat.
Psilocybin has been the main substance investigated over the past twenty years in the context of renewed interest in the therapeutic properties of psychedelics. The results demonstrate their safety and efficacy, as well as the range of conditions they can treat. Through pharmacological, neuroscientific, and clinical research, efforts are being made to create the necessary framework for legal regulation to enable its integration into new mental health treatment models.
On the other hand, various indigenous cultures in Mexico have preserved the use of the mushroom genus containing this molecule as part of their traditional healthcare systems. Archaeological data show that these communities have used these types of mushrooms for at least three thousand years, remaining a cornerstone of life for certain communities to this day.
The event aims to foster dialogue between both realities: contemporary clinical research on psilocybin and the use of sacred mushrooms in traditional Mazatec medicine.
The meeting, organized by the Mental Health Care Service for the Immigrant Population (SATMI) of the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu, will bring together a group of specialists to reflect on the role of the psychedelic therapist and the Mazatec healer, the characteristics of the setting for clinical research and the Mazatec ceremony, and finally, the different ways of understanding health-disease-care processes in both medicines.
The event can be attended in person or online, but registration is mandatory. The full program can be consulted, and registrations can be made at this link, remaining open until 7 March.
