On 24 April the 2nd Conference on Treatment-Resistant Depression, organised by the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu Mental Health Network, will take place, in online and face-to-face format, in the Parc Sanitari SJD Social Centre Auditorium in Sant Boi de Llobregat.

Treatment-resistant depression is a clinical challenge with significant repercussions for patients, healthcare professionals and the healthcare system. Between 20% and 30% of patients with major depression do not respond adequately to conventional treatment, which generates a heavy burden of disability, suffering and risk of chronicity.

The main aim of the conference is to provide mental health professionals with a comprehensive update on treatment-resistant depression, based on the latest scientific evidence from a biopsychosocial approach, with a view to improving clinical practice and optimising therapeutic outcomes in patients with this disorder.

An overall vision to improve day-to-day practice

The aim is to offer a comprehensive multidisciplinary vision of treatment-resistant depression, addressing its medical, psychological and social dimensions in order to provide clinical tools applicable to day-to-day practice with a return and transfer of knowledge that will revert to the patient. An approach that addresses the medical and psychiatric dimension, with innovative therapeutic options such as new drugs, combined strategies and neuromodulation; the psychological dimension with evidence-based treatments, adapted to patients with partial or no response to initial treatments; and the social dimension, evaluating the impact of TRD on the functionality and quality of patients' lives, as well as the importance of social and institutional support.

The key concepts related to treatment-resistant depression, the clinical characteristics of resistant depression, and the latest tools for advanced treatment and their results, based on scientific evidence, will be presented at the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu.

Special emphasis will be placed on the techniques of Interventional Psychiatry with a Precision Psychiatry approach: such as fast-acting treatment assisted with Esketamine, treatment with Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation techniques (NIBS), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and clinical trials in therapy assisted by hallucinogens, such as psilocybin and 5-MeO-DMT.

The scenario of the psychological approach to TRD will also be presented from the point of view of cognitive therapy and the Moral Regulation Theory, as well as the role of nursing care and hospital pharmacies in treatments for TRD.

Finally, there will be a discussion between people with experience of treatment-resistant depression who will share their stories and draw conclusions based on first-person experience.
