The SJD Sant Boi Hospital adapts visits to learn about the birthing circuit to seven languages
It is the first center to offer pregnant mothers audio guides in Arabic, Urdu, Chinese, French, English, Catalan and Spanish to follow the welcome session and the visit to the hospital.
It can be accessed through the 'Having a child at SJD Sant Boi Hospital' section within the Sant Joan de Déu Health Park app.
18% of births that occur at the Sant Joan de Déu Sant Boi Hospital are mothers of Moroccan, Pakistani, Indian or Chinese origin.
These are women who very often do not speak or understand Catalan or Spanish. For this reason, thematernal and child care area of the SJD Sant Boi Hospital has decided to adapt the guided tours for the future mothers to seven languages different. In this way, these women's right to information and to know firsthand what their birth will be like if they have a child in the Hospital can be guaranteed.
“We realized that the entire project of the School of Mothers and Fathers was being held back by the language difficulty of women. We observed that they did not request information or ask any questions. And we believe that it is essential to have knowledge and be able to ask whatever you want to have a full experience of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum”, explains Clara Garcia, coordinator of the maternal and child process and head of Nursing Management.
The audio guides are a reality thanks to the collaboration of the maternal and child area of the SJD Sant Boi Hospital and the Innovation department of the SJD Health Park.
First audio resource for mothers
The SJD Sant Boi Hospital is currently theonly Catalan health center which offers the option to continue, through an app and audio in different languages, the sessions which are usually taught in Catalan public hospitals. These sessions, called School for parents, are organized twice a week at the hospital and are a space for information and interaction with future families where mothers and fathers know, firsthand, the place where they will have their baby. In them, midwives present the pregnancy care model and their own model of childbirth assistance, offering a virtual visit to the Obstetrics Block and they perform a guided tour of the Emergency, Outpatient and Maternity areas, which can be followed in its entirety in any of the languages available in the app.
The SJD Sant Boi Hospital It attends more than 1,100 births annually. It has 1,600 m2 dedicated to women and children, four dilation and delivery rooms, an observation box, two emergency boxes, an exclusively obstetric operating room and a post-surgical resuscitation room.
